#1 North Dakota State at #20 Northern Iowa

Last Year – NDSU beat UNI 30-14 in Fargo

As is usually the case, NDSU isn’t blowing anyone away with their offense, but are winning their games on the strength of their defense. Currently in the top 10 in the FCS in most major defensive categories (including total yards allowed and points per game allowed), the Bison defense is led statistically by SS Robbie Grimsley with 30 tackles (17 solo), 1.5 for loss and has 1 INT. Sophomore LB Jabril Cox is also having an impressive season so far, with 23 tackles (18 solo), 2 for loss, and has 2 interceptions, both of which he took back for TDs. Just to be clear, I’m not saying the NDSU offense is bad (they are most definitely not), they’re just not putting up the huge numbers on offense that some of the other teams are doing, although a big reason for that is that outside of last week’s game against SDSU, the Bison have been getting a big lead early, then putting in younger players and coasting to fairly easy wins. QB Easton Stick is throwing for 55.6% with 672 yards, 5 TDs and 1 INT so far. WR Darrius Shepherd is the top receiving target with 11 catches for 227 yards (56.8 per game) and 2 TDs. TE Ben Ellefson has stepped up this year as a solid “short game” receiver, catching only 17.2 yards per game, but also 2 TDs. As usual though, it’s the NDSU ground game that does much of the work, with RB Bruce Anderson running for about 80 yards per game and 3 TDs, and RB Lance Dunn picking up just over 50 yards per game and has 3 TDs also. QB Stick has 5 rushing TDs himself to go along with just under 40 yards per game. NDSU Punter Garret Wegner has started off the season well also, averaging 44.9 yards per punt with 7 of his 16 punts inside the 20…to be fair, these are all inside the dome, since this is the first week that NDSU has had to travel, but still, it’s a solid punting average.

Northern Iowa’s defense has also really stepped up, especially the last couple of games (although neither were great teams), shutting out Montana in the second half and then (after a FBS game against Iowa) blanking both Hampton and Indiana State. QB Eli Dunne is throwing for just over 158 yards per game with a 57.89% completion rate, 5 TDs and 1 INT. Primary targets are freshman WR Deion McShane (50.75 ypg, 1 TD) and TE Briley Moore (45 ypg, 1 TD), although WR Nick Fossey and TE Elias Nissen have 2 receiving TDs each. RB Trevor Allen is the one getting it done on the ground, with 78 ypg rushing and 2 TDs. RB Marcus Weymiller seems to be down a bit this year so far,  with only 52 ypg and 2 TDs. On the other side of the ball, LB Chris Kolarevic leads the team with 43 tackles (14 solo), 2 for loss and 1 INT. LB Duncan Ferch has 33 tackles (8 solo), 1.5 for loss and has 2 INTs.

North Dakota State has actually struggled the last couple of times they’ve visited the UNIDome, only winning by 4 in 2016 and falling 23-3 in 2014. Overall, I think UNI is a pretty good team and playing at home will help, but NDSU (along with James Madison and SDSU) have really separated themselves from the rest of the FCS in terms of how good they are. That isn’t to say they can’t be beat…they usually drop one contest at some point in the season before plowing through the playoffs, but I don’t think this is the game where that’ll happen. I think it’ll be a close game, although not quite as close as last week’s NDSU game with SDSU. I’m expecting probably a 30-21 Bison victory in this one.

#24 Western Illinois at #13 Illinois State

Last Year – WIU came back from a 14-0 halftime deficit to beat ILSU 31-14.

After starting off the season with 2 losses, WIU has rebounded and won the last two against a good Montana team and a struggling Youngstown State. QB Sean McGuire doesn’t have huge stats, throwing for 281 ypg with a 63% average, 11 TDs and 5 INTs, but McGuire does have the size and experience to be able to frequently turn a broken play into a net positive. The Leathernecks have a plethora of receiving targets, with WR John Brunner averaging 66.25 ypg with 2 TDs, but beyond him, 7 other players have at least 1 receiving TD including 3 for RB Steve McShane and 1 for DE (yes…defensive end) Khalen Saunders. McShane hasn’t had the success at running the ball that he’s had previously, although he is leading the team with 64 yards per game and 2 rushing TDs (to go along with his 3 receiving TDs) and also handles punt return duties, recording a return for a TD against Montana. On the Defense, LBs Quentin Moon and Zach Glisan lead the team with 44 and 41 tackles respectively (Moon leads the MVFC) and in terms of solo tackles, the two are #1 and #2 in the conference with 29 and 26. LB Pete Swenson has 3 sacks on the season (out of 21 tackles) and DBs Zach Muniz and Eric Carrera each have 2 INTs so far this season.

Illinois State rifled off 3 straight wins to start the season including beating FBS Colorado State before an inexplicable loss at Missouri State last weekend. ISU has a stout defense that is only allowing 13.3 points per game (7th in the FCS). LB Zackary Mathews tops the team with 39 tackles (20 solo) and a sack. DE Romeo McKnight has the most tackles for loss with 5 including 2 sacks. DBs Luther Kirk and Devin Taylor and LB Ty DeForest have snagged 2 INTs each. On Offense, RBs James Robinson and Markel Smith are both solid in the run game, with Robinson running for 109 ypg and 5 TDs and catching 28 ypg and 1 TD, and Smith running for 70.5 ypg with 2 TDs and catching 17.5 ypg and 1 TD. WR Spencer Schnell is the main receiver on the squad with 23 catches for 88.2 ypg and 4 TDs. QB is a position that is somewhat “in flux” for the Redbirds, with transfer Brady Davis having most of the playing time, throwing for 234.2 ypg and 10 TDs, but the starter over the last couple of years, Jake Kolbe, also finding time on the field in 3 of their 4 games. He hasn’t thrown a ton, but he has been pretty efficient, hitting his targets 64.3% of the time.

I call this series “Rivalry Light”…the teams are pretty close in proximity (~2 hours drive time)…ILSU is WIU’s #1 most played rival and WIU is ILSU’s #2 behind Eastern Illinois. WIU holds the overall lead in the series, 51-46-3, but ILSU has been catching up with 7 of the last 8 games going to the Redbirds (although only 3 of those 8 have been in Macomb). However, there’s not a lot of “hate” between the two schools overall…maybe because they only play in football, I don’t really know…but it’s not anywhere near the same level as a Lehigh/Lafayette, Montana/Montana State, or NDSU/SDSU. I think that Illinois State probably has a bit of an advantage in this game for a few reasons: It’s at their place, they’re coming off a loss and will want to rebound, they might want “revenge” for WIU coming back and destroying them in the second half last year, and statistically…the Redbirds have performed better so far this season in general. Still, I think most are predicting a margin of within a 1-score game, so I’m going to have to let my “homer flag” fly here (I’m a WIU fan) and predict a Leatherneck win…but it’ll be close…31-27.

#23 Missouri State at South Dakota

Last Year – MSU and USD haven’t played each other since 2015, a 40-10 win for South Dakota in Vermillion.

I’m sorry, I seem to have gotten my numbers mixed up…that can’t possibly say that the Bears are….ranked? What do I do with that information? Am I supposed to notify the authorities…get the Pentagon on the line…run for the hills? Yes, surprisingly enough, after crushing a Northern Arizona team that was expected to be decent and a 3-point win over then #6 ranked Illinois State, Missouri State finds themselves 3-1 and sitting at #23 in this week’s AGS poll. The Bears are led by QB Peyton Huslig, who has 190.2 ypg with 4 TDs passing and 56.8 ypg and 3 TDs rushing. RB Dalton Hill is the other main part of the ground game, running for 72.5 ypg and 5 TDs. Freshman WR Damoriea Vick, Sophomore WR Lorenzo Thomas, and Freshman TE Jordan Murray all have 11 catches and are averaging in the 33-45 ypg range, with Murray also having 2 receiving TDs. Freshman PK Parker Lacina is a perfect 5 for 5 on FGs with 2 coming in the 40+ range. Defensively, LB McNeece Egbim leads the team with 32 tackles (17 solo) and 2 sacks and LB Angelo Garbutt has 26 (15 solo) with 1 sack.

South Dakota, despite being 2-2, has proven to be a tough opponent, narrowly losing to FBS Kansas State and falling to a tough and highly-ranked Weber State team. QB Austin Simmons has proven to be a fairly effective replacement for the (now Winnepeg Blue Bomber) Chris Streveler, with Simmons leading the conference averaging 315.5 ypg with 9 TDs and 3 INTs, as well as 2 rushing TDs. RB Kai Henry also has 2 rushing TDs and he’s averaging just over 42 ypg. WRs Dakarai Allen and Levi Falck get the majority of the passes thrown their way with Allen hauling in 18 for 319 yards and 3 TDs and Falck with 21 catches for 216 yards. Twin brothers Alex (LB) and Andrew (DB) Gray are the top tacklers for the Coyotes. Alex has 35 with 22 solo, 2 sacks, 1 INT, and 1 fumble recovery, while Andrew has 31 with 13 solo, and 1 INT. DL Darin Greenfield puts in a lot of time on the other side of the line of scrimmage, with 6.5 tackles for loss including 3 sacks and 5 QB hurries.

This weekend is USD’s Dakota Days celebration (Homecoming) and they’ve already announced that the game is sold out to the general public, so there’s going to likely be a loud crowd in the DakotaDome on Saturday. It looks like Missouri State is much improved over the last few years, but it’s still early in the season and a lot of their key players are young and inexperienced. I think the Coyotes take this one by around a TD…let’s go with a 32-24 USD win.

Southern Illinois at Youngstown State

Last Year – YSU beat SIU 20-28 in Carbondale

Both SIU and YSU had a bit of a rough go last weekend, with the Penguins falling to Western Illinois and Salukis losing to South Dakota. Both teams are at 1-3 and have started 0-1 in the conference, and with both still having to play teams like NDSU, SDSU, and IL State, neither team is going to be getting many more opportunities for an “easy” win (or, as easy as it can be in the MVFC).

SIU hasn’t had much trouble putting up points, averaging 39.5 per game and having essentially the second most productive offense in the MVFC so far. As is often the case though, the Saluki defense is a bit of a weak spot, giving up 473.5 yards and 41.3 points per game…last in the conference. QB Sam Straub is throwing for 286.8 ypg with 9 TDs, but also has 8 INTs. Straub also runs for nearly 25 ypg and has 2 TDs. RB D.J. Davis leads the conference in rushing yards per game with 134.3, and has 2 TDs. WR Raphael Leonard has most of the catches, nabbing 24 for 84.25 ypg and 4 TDs. WR Landon Lenoir also gets a lot of targets with 21 for nearly 52 ypg and 1 TD. LB Bryce Notree leads the Salukis in tackles with 29 (22 solo), has 2 sacks and 1 INT, while S Jeremy Chinn has 26 (22 solo) an INT and 2 forced fumbles. PK Nico Gualdoni is 6 for 6 on FGs so far, although he hasn’t been asked to try from 40+ yards out yet.

YSU is further down the rankings than SIU on offense, only getting 29.5 points and 425 yards per game, although their defense is a little better, allowing nearly 10 points less per game than SIU’s. RB Tevin McCaster is still doing well this season, rushing for 104.8 ypg with 5 TDs. QB Montgomery VanGorder has 252.8 passing ypg and has 10 TDs with 3 INTs. Having seen him play in person last weekend, I can say that a couple of passes he made were highly suspect and really should have been interceptions if the Leatherneck defenders had been paying any attention…as in, he looked like he was passing straight to the defenders. WR Zach Farrar has 16 catches for 64 ypg with 1 TD. LB Armand Dellovade tops the list at 38 tackles (24 solo), 1 sack, and 1 INT. DE Shereif Bynum is the best at getting pressure behind the line of scrimmage, with 6.5 tackles for loss including 2 sacks and 4 QB hurries.

According to Massey Ratings, for the Penguins, they’re only favored in two more games this season…this one, and Indiana State. For the Salukis…it’s just Indiana State. I think there’s going to be quite a bit of offense…not a lot of defense outside of a few INTs here and there, but I think YSU will come away with a narrow win, 42-38.

Indiana State at #3 South Dakota State

Last Year – INSU and SDSU haven’t played since 2015, a 24-7 Jackrabbit win in Brookings.

The Sycamores are up to 2 wins so far this year, which is technically infinitely better than last year (0 wins), and they performed pretty well in the first half last week against UNI (second half, not so much). QB Ryan Boyle averages 115 ypg and has 1 INT, no passing TDs, and 1 rushing TD. The best receiver is WR Dante Hendrix, who averages just over 50 ypg. About the only bright spot for INSU on offense is RB Ja’Quan Keys, who’s averaging 123 ypg and has 6 rushing TDs. RB Christian Covington has just under 42 ypg and has 4 rushing TDs. Indiana State is actually #2 in the conference for rushing offense currently, putting up just under 250 ypg on the ground. Defensively, LB Katrell Moss has 37 tackles (16 solo) and LB Jonas Griffith has 36 (19 solo) and an INT.

The Jackrabbits meanwhile, have the top scoring offense in the conference with 50.7 ppg (although that’s heavily skewed by only having played 3 games with one of them being a 90-6 blowout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff). They narrowly lost the Dakota Marker rivalry game last weekend at North Dakota State. SDSU also has a defense that’s ranked around #2/#3 in most categories in the conference, so they’re pretty good on both sides of the ball. RB Isaac Wallace has 110.7 ypg rushing with 3 TDs and RB Mikey Daniel, while only getting 28 ypg on the ground, also has 3 TDs. QB Taryn Christion is putting up 284.3 ypg through the air with 10 TDs, 1 INT, and 1 rushing TD. SDSU has two receivers, WRs Cade Johnson and Adam Anderson, who are averaging 100+ receiving yards. Johnson is at 121 ypg with 7 TDs and Anderson has 105.3 ypg with 1 TD. LB Christian Rozeboom leads the team with 20 tackles (8 solo), and 1.5 for loss, while CBs Jordan Brown and Zy Mosley each have 2 INTs. Unfortunately, because of how SDSU’s schedule has turned out so far, individual stats don’t really tell a huge part of the story. Their first game was cancelled due to weather, and their third game was a huge blowout with many of the starters out by halftime.

Personally, I think this game has the strong potential to be the biggest “blowout” of any MVFC game. SDSU is coming off a stinging loss and will want to take out their “anger” on someone…INSU got shut down by UNI and SDSU’s offense is a lot better than UNI’s…and it’s at SDSU, for their Hall of Fame Game, not quite as big as Hobo Days (Homecoming), but still a pretty big game for them. The Sycamores might be able to squeeze out a few points…maybe a rushing TD…possibly a FG, but SDSU will hit hard and hit often. I think this one is going to end up somewhere around 55-10 to South Dakota State.

AGS Poll: Week 5 Top 25 Results

While week 5 didn’t see a large number of upsets there were some major shifts in the AGS top 25 due to the upsets we did see. The top 5 remained unchanged from last week with North Dakota State, James Madison, South Dakota State, Eastern Washington, and Kennesaw State comprising the top 5 in that order.

The big movers up were led by UC Davis who, despite being idle last weekend, moved up 4 spots to crack the AGS top 10 for the first time ever coming in at #9. Stony Brook moved up 6 spots to #12 after edging out Villanova at home. Montana and Towson continued their climbs up the rankings as both moved up 5 spots to #14 and #18, respectively, after each picked up comfortable victories on Saturday. Colgate made the first appearance in the AGS top 25 this year by a Patriot League team as they rose 4 spots to come in at #22 following their 4-0 start. However, the biggest riser of the week was Missouri State who, on the back of an upset win over Illinois State, shot up 11 spots to #23.

As for teams going in the opposite direction they were headlined by Illinois State who fell 7 spots to #13 following their aforementioned loss to Missouri State. Villanova dipped 5 spots down to #19 after a close loss to Stony Brook dropped them to 0-2 in CAA play. Maine plummeted 12 spots down to #21 after being dismantled by unranked Yale. Central Arkansas barely hung on their top 25 ranking dropping 10 spots to come in at #25 after an OT loss to Southland rival Sam Houston State. Chattanooga and Montana State both dropped out of the top 25 after sustaining losses over the weekend.

In terms of conference representation the CAA led the way again with 7 teams in the top 25. They were followed by the MVFC with 6, the Big Sky with 4, and the Southland with 3 teams in the top 25.

Northern Iowa at Indiana State

Northern Iowa headed down to Indiana State for a Thursday night matchup to kick off the MVFC “season”. The game started off pretty slowly, with a successful 46 yard FG for the Panthers the only points in the first quarter. Senior PK Austin Errthum did miss a 49-yard attempt near the end of the quarter. Around halfway through the 2nd, UNI hit a 31-yard FG, followed by a 20-yarder near the end of the half to put Northern Iowa up 9-0 at halftime. In the half, INSU had their own FG attempt, but the 34-yarder went wide right.

In the second half, UNI apparently figured out how to play offense, after holding INSU to a 3-and-out, completed a 45 yard drive capped off with an 18-yard run by RB Trevor Allen. The Panthers picked up another TD following a 90 yard drive finished off with another run by Allen…this time 16 yards into the end zone, which put them up 23-0 going into the final quarter. A 24-yard FG for UNI early in the 4th and then an interception by LB Duncan Ferch taken back 19 yards for a TD put the final score at 33-0, Northern Iowa.

UNI QB Eli Dunne threw for 218 yards in the game…no TDs, but also no INTs. RB Trevor Allen had a career day with 180 yards on the ground and 41 yards receiving (221 all-purpose yards) as well as 2 rushing TDs. LB Chris Kolarevic led the team in tackles with 12 and LB Duncan Ferch had 7 tackles in addition to his previously mentioned pick-6. PK Austin Errthum went 4 out of 5 on FGs, hitting from 46, 31, 20, and 24, and missing a 49 yard attempt. Senior O-lineman Cal Twait was awarded the MVFC Offensive Line Player of the Week award for his part in the Panther offense.

INSU QB Ryan Boyle threw for 136 yards with 1 INT. RB Ja’Quan Keys ran for 76 yards on 16 attempts and WR Dante Hendrix had 5 catches for 76 yards. LB Kattrell Moss led the Sycamores with 12 tackles and DB Jamal Jones had 11 tackles (8 solo) with a fumble recovery.

Northern Iowa is now 2-2 on the season, 1-0 in the MVFC and will have a much tougher contest against North Dakota State back at the UNIDome next weekend. Indiana State falls to 2-2 with a 0-1 MVFC record and will head up to Vermillion to take on South Dakota next weekend.

Illinois State at Missouri State

Illinois State took their perfect record down to Springfield, MO to take on Missouri State on Saturday. Despite Missouri State fumbling on their first drive, ISU wasn’t able to capitalize. The Redbirds missed on a 49-yard FG but on the next drive, MSU hit a 42-yarder to take an early 3-0 lead. Shortly into the second quarter, the Bears were able to start a drive at midfield and move down the field ending in a TD run by QB Peyton Huslig to go up 10-0. Despite an interception picked off by the ISU defense, their offense wasn’t able to turn it into anything and the score would remain 10-0 MSU at halftime.

The second half saw Illinois State take their second drive down the field topping it off with a 5-yard TD pass to WR Spencer Schnell to pull back within 3. Two plays into MSU’s next drive, an ISU INT would give the Redbirds the ball just inside the red zone, which they would take in 2 plays later on another TD pass to Schnell and would give Illinois State the lead for the first time in the game. MSU responded with a long 75-yard drive topped off with a 5 yard TD run by RB Donovan Daniels to put the Bears back up 17-14. Early in the 4th, MSU would pick up another score on a 1 yard TD run by RB Jason Randall to take a 2-possession lead. With a bit over 3 minutes left in the game, ISU pulled back within 3 on a 43-yard TD pass from QB Brady Davis to RB James Robinson. With time winding down, ISU got down into the red zone to attempt a 32-yard FG in the final seconds, but the FG was blocked by MSU CB Darius Joseph to preserve the 3-point win, 24-21.

ILSU QB Brady Davis threw for 226 yards and 3 TDs with 0 INTs. RB Markel Smith ran 6 times for 80 yards (13.3 yards per run average). RB James Robinson also had productive day, running for 54 yards and catching 6 for 97 yards and 1 TD. WR Spencer Schnell had 5 receptions for 71 yards and 2 TDs. LB Zackary Mathews led the team with 16 tackles (10 solo). DBs Luther Kirk and Devin Taylor each had INTs, and LB Tuvone Clark forced a fumble that was recovered by LB Ty Deforest.

MSU QB Peyton Huslig threw for 232 yards and 2 INTs (zero passing TDs), but also ran for 52 yards and 1 TD. RB Jason Randall ran for 63 yards and 1 TD and Donovan Daniels also ran for a TD. The best receiving performance was by true freshman WR Damoriea Vick with 7 catches for 99 yards. LB McNeese Egbim led the Bears with 9 tackles including 1 sack. Junior CB Darius Joseph was named the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his 8 tackles and blocking the FG attempt that would preserve the MSU victory.

Despite the statistical advantage to ISU in many categories (including +3 turnover ratio), MSU was able to get it done with the ground game, successfully defending one of ISU’s best offensive weapons in James Robinson, leading in time of possession, and capitalizing on a few ISU mistakes to earn a surprising win (well…surprising to most people outside of Springfield, MO) over a highly ranked Redbirds squad.

Illinois State drops to 3-1 overall with a 0-1 conference record and will welcome Western Illinois to town for their “Spack Stache Bash” game. Missouri State also has a 3-1 record but is 1-0 against the MVFC so far and will head up to South Dakota next weekend to take on the Coyotes.

South Dakota State at North Dakota State

The Dakota Marker Game…two of the best teams in the FCS going head-to-head for rivalry bragging rights and a big step towards deciding who will likely win the conference title and automatic bid to the playoffs.

The Jackrabbits got things going first with an 89 yard drive over 10 plays that finished with a 3-yard TD pass from QB Taryn Christion to WR Cade Johnson to take a 7-0 lead. The Bison were slower to start, not picking up their first 1st down until a couple of minutes into the 2nd quarter, but that was immediately followed up by a 17-yard TD pass from QB Easton Stick to TE Ben Ellefson, tying up the game at 7. Later in the 2nd, NDSU kicker Cam Peterson missed a 48 yard FG, but on the next Bison drive, they were able to make it all the way to the end zone on a 41-yard TD pass to WR Darrius Shepherd to take a 14-7 lead which was the score going into halftime.

In the 3rd, SDSU CB Jordan Brown had an interception that the Jackrabbits were able to turn into a 39-yard FG by PK Chase Vinatieri to pull within 4. On their next drive, SDSU would regain the lead courtesy of a 61-yard TD run by RB Isaac Wallace. In a drive that started in the 3rd and ended in the 4th quarter, the Bison offense used a couple of big plays to move 80 yards down the field and finish with a 5-yard TD run by Easton Stick to take a 21-17 lead early in the quarter. SDSU missed on a 48-yard FG on their next drive and the defenses would hold the rest of the way, giving NDSU the 4-point victory and possession of the Dakota Marker Trophy.

SDSU QB Taryn Christion threw for 202 yards and 1 TD with 1 INT and ran for 29 yards. RB Isaac Wallace ran for 112 yards and 1 TD and had 21 yards receiving. WR Adam Anderson caught 8 passes for 102 yards. Defensively, LB Christian Rozeboom had 12 tackles (4 solo) and CB Jordan Brown had an INT to go with 4 solo tackles.

NDSU QB Easton Stick threw for 182 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT while running for 63 yards and 1 TD. The rest of the Bison stable of RBs were held mostly in check with RBs Bruce Anderson and Lance Dunn each picking up between 55-60 yards each. WR Darrius Shepherd caught 5 passes for 118 yards and 1 TD and TE Ben Ellefson had 28 yards and 1 TD on 2 catches. S Robbie Grimsley and LB Jabril Cox led the Bison with 8 tackles. CB Jalen Allison had 3 tackles and an interception returned 31 yards. Punter Garret Wegner averaged 47.4 yards per punt on 5 punts with 3 inside the 20 yard line.

South Dakota State falls to 2-1 overall with a 0-1 MVFC record and will head back to Brookings to take on Indiana State next week in their Hall of Fame Game. North Dakota State remains a perfect 4-0 on the season (1-0 in MVFC games) and head down to Northern Iowa next weekend.

Youngstown State at Western Illinois

For the first time since 2015, the Penguins traveled to Macomb to take on Western Illinois. On WIU’s first drive, an 8-yard pass to TE Adam Conrady would yield a TD and give WIU an early 6-0 lead after an odd failed 2-pt attempt. Later in the 1st. YSU RB Tevin McCaster would cap off a 67-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run and give the Penguins a 7-6 lead. Early in the 2nd, WIU went up 9-7 on a successful 35-yard FG by PK Sam Crosa. YSU attempted their own FG on their next drive, but the 41-yard attempt would go wide left. WIU DB Zach Muniz would pick off a pass by Youngstown QB Montgomery VanGorder, which WIU was able to move down the field with and finish with a 2-yard TD run by QB Sean McGuire to take a 16-7 lead into halftime.

In the 3rd WIU’s first drive was a short one…1 play…a 75-yard TD run by RB Steve McShane to increase the Leathernecks’ lead to 16. The Penguins were able to respond with points on their next drive, hitting a 24-yard FG. Western Illinois got right back to work and drove 69 yards down the field, capped off with a 3 yard TD pass to DE Khalen Saunders (yes…a TD pass to a DE put in as an eligible receiver on offense) to go ahead 30-10. Again Youngstown was able to respond with their own drive and TD on a 21-yard pass to WR Zach Farrar.

Early in the 4th, YSU had another TD on a 2-yard Tevin McCaster run which put the Penguins within 1 score, down 30-24. The Leathernecks opened the lead back up again on a 30-yard TD pass to WR Isaiah Lesure and a successful 2-point conversion would make up for the failed one early in the game and WIU had a 38-24 lead. On YSU’s next play from scrimmage, a completed pass turned into a fumble forced by WIU LB Quentin Moon and was recovered by WIU, which led to a 32-yard TD pass to WIU RB Clint Ratkovich to give the Leathernecks a 45-24 lead with only about 7 minutes left in the game. YSU would not go away quietly however, when, after a TD pass to WR Jermiah Braswell, the Penguins completed a successful onside kick to retain possession. They drove down the field again, reaching the 2 yard line, but had a pass intercepted by DB Justin Fitzpatrick to give WIU the ball back out at the 20. WIU wasn’t able to do anything with it, however, and YSU scored on their next drive to pull back within 1 score, 45-38. This time, however, the onside kick attempt failed and WIU was able to run the clock down the final minute and take the win.

YSU QB Montgomery VanGorder was 33 of 57 on passes for 418 yards (all school records) and 3 TDs, but also had 2 INTs. His performance earned him the MVFC Newcomer of the Week award. RB Tevin McCaster was held to 40 yards, but did pick up 2 rushing TDs. WR Zach Farrar caught 5 passes for 83 yards and 1 TD and WR Jermiah Braswell had 63 yards and 1 TD.

WIU QB Sean McGuire threw for 324 yards and 4 TDs with no interceptions and ran for 1 TD, which earned him the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week award. RB Steve McShane ran for 134 yards and 1 TD on 12 attempts. WR Isaiah Lesure had 6 catches for 99 yards and 1 TD and RB Clint Ratkovich, TE Adam Conrady, and DE Khalen Saunders each had TD receptions. DB Eric Carrera and LB Quentin Moon led the team with 10 tackles each (7 solo for each of them) and Moon had a forced fumble. DBs Zach Muniz and Justin Fitzpatrick each had INTs. DE Khalen Saunders had 5 tackles (4 solo) to go along with his TD reception, which was his first catch for a TD in his collegiate career. He also had a TD run in 2017 against Tennessee Tech.

Youngstown State drops to 1-3 overall with a 0-1 conference record and will head back home and welcome the Southern Illinois Salukis to town for the Penguins’ Homecoming. Western Illinois is now 2-2 and 1-0 in MVFC play and will travel to Illinois State next weekend.

South Dakota at Southern Illinois

In the final MVFC game of the weekend, the USD Coyotes visited the SIU Salukis down in Carbondale, IL. Early on, a pass from SIU QB Sam Straub was intercepted by DB Mark Collins Jr. and returned 30 yards which gave USD the ball at the SIU 9 yard line. Two plays later, and the Coyotes had their first points of the game on a 1-yard run by RB Kai Henry. The next drive, a 10-yard TD pass to TE Nigel Kilby tied up the game at 7. Later in the 1st quarter, USD QB Austin Simmons had a pass intercepted by SIU S Jeremy Chinn, which was returned 23 yards…and then fumbled…but was recovered by SIU CB Madre Harper…and taken another 13 yards. 1 play later and SIU would take a 14-7 lead on a 20-yard TD pass again to the TE Kilby. 9 drives…and 9 punts later (but still in the first half), USD drove down the field 74 yards but only came away with a 23-yard FG from PK Mason Lorber to pull within 4. SIU had their own drive of nearly the same distance (76 yards) at one point getting into the red zone and being picked off by USD DB Elijah Reed in the end zone, however an offsides penalty on the Coyotes gave the ball back to the Salukis. Despite the gift, they would only get as close as the 5 and would have to settle for a 22-yard FG as time expired in the first half with a 17-10 SIU lead.

The 3rd quarter was pretty much all ‘Yotes though, with a 9-yard TD pass to WR Randy Baker tying the game early at 17. Then a 38-yard pass and 45-yard TD pass to Baker gave USD a 24-17 lead, and an 89-yard TD pass to WR Dakarai Allen put USD up 31-17. Southern Illinois was able to put together another quality drive late in the 4th quarter, finishing with a 1-yard TD run by true freshman QB Javon Williams (direct snap, wildcat-style). The onside kick attempt would be unsuccessful, however, and time would run out for the Salukis, with South Dakota taking the 31-24 victory.

USD QB Austin Simmons threw for 333 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT. WR Dakarai Allen had 6 catches for 183 yards and 1 TD and WR Randy Baker had 6 for 80 yards with 2 TDs. Senior FS Andrew Gray won the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week award with his 14 tackle (11 solo) performance with an interception.

SIU QB Sam Straub threw for 320 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs and ran for 33 yards. RB DJ Davis ran for 117 yards, and TE Nigel Kilby caught 7 passes for 109 yards and 2 TDs. SIU LB Bryce Notree led the Salukis with 11 tackles (10 solo) with 2 for loss. S Jeremy Chinn had 5 tackles to go along with his interception, and redshirt freshman LB Luke Giegling had two tackles…both sacks.

South Dakota is now 2-2 on the season with a 1-0 conference record and will head back home next weekend, hosting a surprisingly decent Missouri State team. Southern Illinois falls to 1-3 with a 0-1 MVFC record and will travel out east to Youngstown to take on the Penguins.

How’d I Do?

UNI @ INSU – I predicted 30-13 win for UNI. It was 33-0 win for UNI. So, the Panther defense is a bit better than I thought, but I think the result is pretty close to what I expected.

ILSU @ MSU – I predicted 36-20 win for ILSU. It was 24-21 win for MSU. I don’t think anyone expected MSU to win this game with as good as Illinois State had been looking the last few weeks. I completely whiffed on this one.

SDSU @ NDSU – I predicted 35-28 win for NDSU. It was 21-17 win for NDSU. I was off on the point totals, but pretty close on the spread. SDSU’s defense performed better than I expected, but I think overall, not a bad pick.

YSU @ WIU – I predicted 30-23 win for WIU. It was 45-38 win for WIU. Exactly on target for the margin of victory and winner…I figured there’d be a bit more defense in this game, but otherwise pretty close to what I was expecting.

USD @ SIU – I predicted 35-17 win for USD. It was 31-24 win for USD. SIU was much more competitive than I originally gave them credit for, but the end result was about what I expected.

So, overall, I think that’s a 4-1 for me, missing on the ILSU at MSU game.

Up next weekend is North Dakota State at Northern Iowa, Western Illinois at Illinois State, Missouri State at South Dakota, Southern Illinois at Youngstown State, and Indiana State at South Dakota State. All games this week are Saturday afternoon, with start times from 1 PM to 6 PM Central.

Patriot League Week 5: Only One Has A Chance To Reach Nirvana

The first month of the season went about as poorly as it possibly could have for the Patriot League. Last week saw the league bottom out with a 0-5 record in non-conference play. For the season, the Patriot League is an abysmal 4-19 overall in non-conference games. The only team in the league with a winning record, Colgate, has a favorable matchup this week against a struggling William & Mary team. A Raider win would give themselves and the Patriot League a second win against the vaunted CAA. In a season that’s been as ugly as this one, any bit of positivity must be accentuated.

The Games

In honor of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” being released nearly 27 years ago to the day, September 24, 1991, we’re going to give this week’s Patriot League picks a proper “grungy” angle.

Georgetown (1-3) at Brown (0-2) 1 P.M. Brown Stadium Providence, RI

Live Streaming: ESPN+

The Pick:With the lights out it’s less dangerous; Here we are, entertain us; I feel stupid and contagious; Here we are now, entertain us”. Arguably the worst team in the Ivy League, Brown, hosts one of, if not the worst squad from the Patriot League, Georgetown. As the old cliché goes, something has to give when these two butt heads Saturday afternoon in Providence. Both offenses have struggled to start the year. With that in mind, whichever team can scratch and claw to 20 points will win. In Hoya QB Gunther Johnson we trust to provide the entertainment.

Georgetown 20 Brown 17

Bucknell (0-4) at Holy Cross (1-3, 0-1) 1 P.M. Fitton Field Worcester, MA

Live Streaming: Patriot League Network

The Pick: I’m so happy because today; I’ve found my friends; They’re in my head; I’m so ugly, but that’s okay, ‘cause so are you”. The Bob Chesney era at Holy Cross has gotten off to a rough start. The Crusaders are coming off an ugly 34-14 loss to Dartmouth in which they failed to notch a first down during the opening 30 minutes of play. Bucknell’s season so far has been a complete disaster a narrow loss to William and Mary to start the season. The 2018 campaign reached its peak of ugliness (so far) last week when the Bison were run off the field in the first half against Villanova.

Holy Cross 24 Bucknell 10

Central Connecticut State (2-2) at Lafayette (0-4, 0-1) 6 P.M Fisher Field Easton, PA

Live Streaming: Patriot League Network

The Pick: One baby to another says “I’m so grateful to meet you”; I don’t care what you think unless it’s about me; It’s now my duty to completely drain you”. The Blue Devils head to Lafayette off a victory over fellow winless Patriot League member Fordham. Central Connecticut State used big plays on offense, defense and special teams to escape the Bronx with a win. Meanwhile, Lafayette was completely outclassed in all 3 phases last week in their 45-0 blowout loss to Colgate. The Leopards offense continues to be among the most inept units in FCS. Unless former Lafayette greats Tom Kirchoff and Erik Marsh have some eligibility left the Leopards “O” will continue to circle the drain.

Central Connecticut State 30 Lafayette 13

Colgate (3-0, 2-0) at William & Mary (1-3) 6 P.M. Zable Stadium Williamsburg, VA

Live Streaming: Stretch Internet

The Pick: Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be; As a friend, as a friend, as and old enemy; Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don’t be late”. The Raiders appear to be the best team in the Patriot League by a decent amount through the first few weeks of the season. The only knock against Colgate to this point is the suspect competition they’ve faced. Things don’t appear to get any tougher this week with the offensively challenged Tribe on deck. The last Patriot League team to beat two CAA teams in the same season? Colgate in the 2015 FCS playoffs (New Hampshire & James Madison). The last Patriot League team to beat two or more CAA teams in the same regular season? It’s never happened. Colgate has been eagerly waiting for this one since the Furman game was postponed two weeks ago.

Colgate 31 William & Mary 14

The FCS Wedge – 2018-0926 – Wk5 INTERVIEW (Dave Cook-EWU)

Kris did an interview with Eastern Washington University’s Dave Cook (SID) this week.  Great look into what an SID does and some of Dave’s thoughts and memories over his 29 year career thus far.

6:00 PM – South Dakota (1-2) at Southern Illinois (1-2), ESPN3

So, with this being still pretty early in the season, it’s hard to tell how things are going to shake out. Some teams have played incredibly difficult schedules to start the season (USD, WIU, UNI) and some have played stupidly easy schedules (ILSU, SDSU, INSU). With no conference teams playing each other yet, record and SoS is probably the best way to compare teams. This first week of conference games, I’ll pretty much just mention the top few players for each team stats-wise and give a quick prediction. For transparency, I will attempt to be as unbiased as possible, but I have been a WIU football fan for ~22 years, just so you’re aware.

#22 Northern Iowa  at Indiana State

Last Year – UNI won 41-3 in Cedar Falls

Northern Iowa is 1-2 after losing a close game at Montana, getting beaten up by FBS Iowa, and then steamrolling Hampton back at the UNIDome. Indiana State is 2-1 following a big win over DII Quincy, a loss at FBS Louisville and winning by 14 on the road at Eastern Illinois. According to Massey, UNI has played the 4th toughest schedule in the FCS so far and INSU has played the 89th toughest.

UNI’s True Freshman WR Deion McShane currently leads the team in receiving yards with 54 per game and 1 TD, although he really only got in on 1 play against Iowa and had most of his yards (117) against Hampton last week. He was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week, and with older brother Steve McShane frequently making plays at RB with Western Illinois, it’ll be interesting to see if we end up with brothers on two different teams getting Player of the Week awards in the same week, or even both ending up on the All-MVFC teams at the end of the season. Redshirt Freshman LB Chris Kolarevic is already up to 31 tackles through 3 games, has 2 tackles for loss and an INT so far this season. DL Bryce Douglas leads the team in tackles for loss with 5 including ½ sack so far.

INSU Freshman WR Dakota Caton earned himself a special teams player of the week award after the first weekend of games following a 71-yard punt return TD against DII Quincy. Senior HB Ja’Quan Keys ran for 232 yards and 4 TDs in their game against Eastern IL and picked up an offensive player of the week award. He currently leads the Sycamores with a 138.67 yard per game average and 6 rushing TDs. On defense, Junior LB Jonas Griffith leads the team with 30 total tackles, 2 for loss, and 1 INT. Junior DL Inoke Moala is on top for both tackles for loss (2.5) and sacks (1.5) to go along with 11 tackles. One of the better kickers in the conference is INSU’s Jerry Nunez. The junior PK is 15 for 15 on XP attempts and 2 for 2 on FG attempts so far this year, although to be fair, they were both in the 20-29 yard range, so he hasn’t really been tested this year.

INSU didn’t win a single game last year, so they’ve already infinitely improved over last year (that’s how that works, right?). I do think they’re better, but not really that much better. Offensively, the Sycamores can put up some points, but so can Northern Iowa. Defensively…I think the Panthers have a distinct advantage and will be able to hold Indiana State to a couple of scores…maybe a TD and a couple of FGs, while putting up something close to 30 points themselves. I’m going to have to go with something resembling a 30-13 win for UNI in this one.

#6 Illinois State at Missouri State

Last Year – ILSU won 34-9 in Springfield, MO

Illinois State has rifled off three solid wins so far this season against the 77th ranked SoS (currently) opponents. They crushed NAIA St. Xavier (as expected), steamrolled Eastern Illinois by 38 points, which wasn’t a huge surprise although it is generally a closer game than that, but then they headed out to Colorado State and ran all over the FBS CSU Rams. Missouri State has played the 57th toughest SoS and are 2-1 coming out of it. They lost at Big 12 Oklahoma State, then opened at home on a Thursday afternoon (schedule adjusted due to weather) in a big win over DII Lincoln University of Missouri, and…like Illinois State, finished up their OOC slate with a big win over a tough program…in the Bears’ case, a 40-8 demolishing of Northern Arizona.

Illinois State sophomore DB Devin Taylor was last week’s MVFC defensive player of the week after a 8-tackle (6 solo) and an INT performance against Colorado State. Sophomore punter JT Bohlken received the special teams player of the week award for his performance in the same game, averaging 51.4 yards per punt on 7 punts and pinning CSU within their own 20 yard line 3 times. ILSU’s transfer QB (from Memphis) Brady Davis has had an impressive first few games, throwing for 237 yards per game and 7 TDs with 0 INTs so far for a 177.22 efficiency rating, which earned him a newcomer of the week award following the first game of the year. RB James Robinson has been steadily chugging away, putting up 127.3 yards per game with 5 rushing TDs. Senior LB Zackary Mathews currently leads the team with 23 total tackles (10 solo) and has 3 tackles for loss w/ 1 sack.

Missouri State Sophomore LB Tyler Lovelace picked up a defensive player of the week award following a strong performance against Northern Arizona where he had 2 solo tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception returned 18 yards. QB Peyton Huslig has thrown for 176.3 yards per game with 4 TDs, but also 4 INTs so far this season. In addition, he’s run for 58.3 yards per game and has 2 TDs on the ground. Jason Randall is the primary rusher for the Bears, putting up 75.7 yards per game and 4 TDs. Jr. LB McNeece Egbim leads the team with 23 tackles (11 solo) including 1 sack and So. DT Claudio Martin is at the top for sacks with 3 (out of 4 total tackles).

Like Indiana State, I feel like Missouri State has taken a bit of a step forward after last year. Unfortunately for the Bears, it looks like Illinois State has taking a very big step forward and will likely compete at the top of the conference for much of the year. They put up 35 points against an FBS team and should be able to surpass that against Missouri State. MSU has also put up a lot of points, but I think they’ll struggle against a solid ILSU defense. I’m going with a 36-20 Redbird victory at MSU’s Family Weekend game.

#3 South Dakota State at #1 North Dakota State

Last Year – SDSU won 33-21 in Brookings, SD

South Dakota State had their first game of the season against Iowa State cancelled due to storms. In their first actual game, they hosted Montana State and cruised to a 45-14 victory. Two weeks ago, Arkansas-Pine Bluff came to town and the Jackrabbits set all kinds of records in a 90-6 beatdown before taking last weekend off to prepare for this week. SDSU has currently played the 86th toughest schedule in the FCS and have a 2-0 record. North Dakota State has steamrolled everyone put in front of them, holding a 3-0 record and the #1 rank in nearly every poll out there. Their schedule so far is the 67th toughest in the FCS although they’ve won every game in very convincing fashion…by 46 points over Cal Poly, by 31 over North Alabama, and by 28 over Delaware. With so many of the games for both teams being very lopsided, individual player stats can be misleading. I’m pretty sure that in the majority of these games, most of the starters were sitting by the start of the second half, if not sooner in some cases.

South Dakota State Sophomore Guard Edward Miller was awarded the MVFC lineman of the week after the matchup with Pine Bluff. The week before that, Sophomore WR Cade Johnson picked up 4 TDs and 138 yards against Montana State and earned the co-offensive player of the week award. Johnson is averaging 150 yards per game for the season. Senior punter Brady Hale was the special teams player of the week the same week for a 4-punt 48-yard average performance that had 3 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line. RB Isaac Wallace has been getting the job done on the ground, with a 111 yard/game average and 15.9 yards per run. QB Taryn Christion has started off his senior season solidly, with a 275.3 efficiency rating, 325.5 yards per game passing with 9 TDs and 0 INTs. Defensively senior LB Eric Kleinschmit leads the team in tackles with 11.

North Dakota State QB Easton Stick picked up the offensive player of the week award after last week’s performance against Delaware. He’s averaging 163.3 yards per game and has 3 TDs through the air and 32 yards per game with 4 TDs on the ground. Sophomore tackle Dillon Radunz was the MVFC Lineman of the week for the same game. Senior RB Bruce Anderson and Senior C Tanner Volson received offensive and O-Line player of the week awards during the first week of the season. Anderson is averaging 88 ypg and 8.2 yards per carry with 3 TDs. LB Jabril Cox has had an impressive start to his season with 15 tackles (11 solo), but also INTs returned for TDs in back-to-back games, which means that technically, Cox currently leads the Bison in receiving TDs with 2. Safety Robbie Grimsley leads the team in tackles with 22, 1.5 for loss, and has 1 INT.

So, if you don’t consider this the FCS game of the week, then I don’t know what you’re on. The #3 team in the FCS against the #1 team and defending national champions. Last year, NDSU lost one game all season…this one.. The year before, NDSU lost the game in the regular season, but then got revenge by beating SDSU in the playoffs. Over the last few years, the Jackrabbits haven’t always come away victorious, but they’ve proven to be just about the only team that can compete with the Bison on a regular basis. This game is also the Dakota Marker game…a comparatively new rivalry trophy, but the rivalry itself goes back to 1903 with 107 matchups throughout its history. I think this will be a big-time battle, and SDSU is still one of the best teams in the FCS, but NDSU looks even better this year than they have the past few years and I think they’ll come away with a 1-score win….35-28.

Youngstown State at #25 Western Illinois

Last Year – YSU and WIU haven’t played each other since 2015, which was a 23-21 Penguin victory.

Youngstown State has played the 52nd toughest FCS schedule this season and have a 1-2 record to show for it. They started the season with a surprising loss to non-scholarship Butler, then went down to FBS West Virginia and got rolled by 35 points. They then headed back home to take on another non-scholarship Pioneer League team, this time finding their first win, by 35 points over Valparaiso. Western Illinois has the same record as YSU, 1-2, but have played a much tougher schedule (3rd in the FCS). The Leathernecks started off the season losing a close game by a FG at Montana State. They then traveled to FBS Illinois, where they lost by 20. Finally heading back home, WIU got their first win of the season, beating Top 25-ranked Montana by 4.

YSU RB Tevin McCaster is the focus of the Penguin offense, rushing for 126.3 yards per game and 3 TDs. QB Montgomery VanGorder has been throwing 197.7 yards per game with 7 TDs and 1 INT so far. Senior LB Armand Dellovade leads the defense with 23 tackles (17 solo) and 1 INT. WR Zach Farrar has a 57.7 yards/game average on 11 catches.

WIU had both the special teams player and newcomer of the week awards two weeks ago, with RB Steve McShane returning a punt for a TD for the first one and transfer WR John Brunner earning the other with a 144 yard, 2 TD performance. McShane is only averaging 40.67 yards per game on the ground with 1 TD, but he’s also the #2 receiver with 47.67 yards per game and 3 TDs on 21 catches. Brunner has 19.5 yards per catch and 78 yards per game averages through the first 3 games. Senior QB Sean McGuire has been throwing for 266.67 yards per game with 7 TDs but has had 5 INTs this year. LBs Zach Glisan and Quentin Moon lead the team with 34 tackles each (21 and 22 solo, respectively). Moon also has ½ sack and a forced fumble and recovery.

Both teams appear to be down a bit from the past few years, although YSU has had problems both on and off the field. They both have RBs who can make huge plays at times, but I think that WIU has the advantage through the air. With those factors, and the game being played at WIU, I think that points to something like a 30-23 Western Illinois win.

South Dakota at Southern Illinois

Last Year – South Dakota won 42-0 in Vermillion, SD

South Dakota is currently 1-2, but having faced the #1 toughest schedule in the FCS so far. They started off the season at Big 12 K-State, leading for much of the game up until around halfway through the 4th quarter but ultimately falling by 3. They then headed home and took on Northern Colorado, who they beat 43-28. Finally, they headed out to Utah to take on Weber State, a highly-ranked team that was probably the toughest non-seeded team in the playoffs last year, where they fell 27-10. Southern Illinois is also 1-2, against the 35th strongest schedule. They began their season with a 39-point walloping of Murray State. They then played at SEC’s Ole Miss, where they competed well for a while, before getting blown out late, 76-41. Finally, they had their home opener against non-conference rival Southeast Missouri State, who beat the Salukis in a back-and-forth nailbiter, 48-44.

USD Junior QB Austin Simmons was the co-offensive player of the week a few weeks ago following a 462 yard 4 TD passing (plus 80 yards and 1 TD rushing) performance. He is averaging 309.67 yards per game overall with 6 TDs and 2 INTs. Junior DE Darin Greenfield had the defensive player of the week award the same week, putting up 7 tackles including 2 sacks, and has 14 total tackles on the season. The first week of the season, Senior LB Alex Gray took and INT back for a TD, recovered a fumble, had 2 sacks and 6 tackles against K-State and earned the defensive player of the week. Gray currently leads the team with 25 total tackles, 4.5 for loss.

Southern Illinois RB DJ Davis leads the team (actually the entire conference) with 140 yards per game and 2 TDs on the ground. On the receiving front, WR Raphael Leonard has had 2 straight games of 100+ yards receiving and 2 TDs. He’s averaging 88 yards per game overall. QB Sam Straub has been doing well, throwing for 275.67 yards per game and has 7 TDs, but he also has 6 INTs. Straub also runs pretty well, picking up an average of 22 yards per game and has 2 TDs rushing. Safety Jeremy Chinn has 21 total tackles (20 solo) and 2 forced fumbles.

Let’s see….take last year’s result…42-0, add maybe two TDs because SIU looks better this year. Subtract a TD from the Coyotes because Simmons is good, but isn’t quite Streveler. Give SIU another 3 points for home field advantage and it all works out to…a 35-17 USD victory. #hedidthemath
