AGS Poll: Week 1 Top 25 Result

Week 1 (along with week 0) of the 2022 season is in the books and after our first glimpse this season of most of the teams ranked in the AGS Top 25 we have a pretty much unchanged top of the poll but some volatility further down. The top 5 remained the same from the preseason poll with North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Montana, Montana State, and Villanova claiming the top 5 spots in that order.

Incarnate Word led the charge of teams moving up the rankings this week as they rose up 6 spots to #8 and their highest ever ranking in the AGS Poll following a decisive victory over Southern Illinois. Delaware moved up 7 spots to #9 after taking down FBS foe Navy. Their CAA league-mate William & Mary shot up 15 spots to #16 after their own FBS win thoroughly beating Charlotte. Jackson State made a 5 spot jump up to #18 after dismantling one of their SWAC rivals Florida A&M and Samford came from completely out of the poll all the way up to #21 after an upset win over previously top 10 Kennesaw State.

The teams heading in the other direction started with Stephen F Austin who, despite winning this past weekend, dropped 8 spots to #20 after being trounced by Jacksonville State in week 0. The aforementioned Southern Illinois and Kennesaw State each plummeted 14 and 17 spots, respectively, to #23 and #24 after their surprising week 1 losses. Despite playing, and losing to, an FBS foe Northern Iowa slid down 7 spots barely hanging in at #25. UC Davis and South Dakota each dropped out of the top 25 after taking FBS losses of their own.

The Big Sky and the MVFC led the way each putting 5 teams into the top 25. They were followed by the CAA and SOCON, who each had 4, and the Southland who had 2 teams in the top 25. 10 different conferences were represented in this week’s top 25.

AGS Poll: Preseason 2022 Top 25 Results

Another season of FCS football is almost upon us signaling the return of the AGS Top 25. As is normal with the preseason poll there was plenty of movement from the previous poll but the top was full of familiar faces starting with defending champion North Dakota State coming it at #1 getting all but 1 of the 42 first place votes. They were followed by rival South Dakota State at #2. Treasure State brethren Montana and Montana State came in at #3 and #4, respectively. The top 5 was rounded out by CAA favorite Villanova at #5.

Teams on the rise from the final 2021 AGS Top 25 were led by Missouri State who went up 7 spots to #8 which tied for their highest ranking ever in the AGS Poll. Stephen F Austin also made a 9 spot jump to #12 as they look to take control of the WAC with the exit of Sam Houston to the FBS. A couple teams the AGS voters expect to bounce back are Chattanooga, who shot up 23 spots to #15, and Delaware, who came from completely out of the final 2021 rankings all the way to #16. Weber State and Rhode Island each moved up 11 spots from their final 2021 rankings to get into the top 25 at #20 and #25, respectively. Mercer was another team that climbed back into the top 25 moving up 5 spots to #21.

There wasn’t much for big movers going down. UC Davis took a 6 spot dip to #24 in this initial 2022 release. Three Ivy League teams – Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton – all dropped out of the consensus top 25. We also had a couple notable omissions due to FBS defections with James Madison and Sam Houston no longer being eligible for votes and therefore not appearing in this poll. James Madison broke a streak of 100 consecutive polls in the top 25 which was the 6th longest streak in AGS Poll history.

The Big Sky and MVFC led the way each putting 6 teams into the top 25 representing nearly half of it by themselves. They were followed by the CAA and SOCON with 3 each and the Southland with 2 teams in the top 25. 10 conferences were represented by at least one team in the top 25.

AGS Poll: Final 2021 Top 25 Results

With the completion of the playoffs comes the final AGS Poll release of the 2021 FCS season. Not surprisingly a familiar name returned to the #1 spot as North Dakota State took all 41 first place votes after winning their 9th FCS national championship. They were followed by runner-up Montana State who jumped up 6 spots to #2. James Madison stayed at #3 in what might be their last appearance in the AGS Poll as they begin their transition to FBS next season. South Dakota State moved up 7 spots to #4 after a run to the semifinals and Sam Houston fell down to #5 in what may also be their final appearance in the AGS Poll before they begin their own FBS transition.

Tennessee-Martin was amongst other teams on the rise jumping up 7 spots to #13 after upsetting Missouri State in the 1st round of the playoffs before falling at eventual national runner-up Montana State. Southern Illinois also made a 5 spot jump after beating MVFC rival South Dakota in the 1st found before bowing out to eventual national champ NDSU. Harvard moved back into the top 25 for this final poll.

Teams dropping in this final poll were headlined by Eastern Washington who dropped 5 spots to #9 after a 2nd round playoff exit. Missouri State and South Dakota each dropped 5 spots to #15 and #20, respectively, following their aforementioned 1st round losses. Jackson State took a 7 spot tumble barely hanging on at #25 following their surprisingly lopsided Celebration Bowl loss to South Carolina State. Mercer fell out of the top 25.

The MVFC led the way in terms of conference representation placing 6 teams into the top 25. They were followed by the Big Sky with 5, the Ivy League with 3, and the AQ7, CAA, and Southland with 2 teams each in the top 25. 11 conferences were represented by at least one team in the final AGS Top 25 of 2021.
