Week 5 didn’t see a lot of upsets amongst the AGS Top 25 but the few it did see shook things up quite a bit as we head into the meat of the 2024 season. Idle South Dakota State maintained its grip on the #1 spot with 40 of the 45 first place votes. They were once again followed by Montana State at #2. North Dakota State and South Dakota each moved up a spot to #3 and #4, respectively. North Dakota made it a 4th Dakota team in the top 5 as they moved up 2 spots to #5.

Other teams on the rise this week included UC Davis who moved up 5 spots to #7 after a huge win over previously 3rd ranked Idaho. UAC conference-mates Tarleton and Abilene Christian each moved up 3 spots to #15 and #17, respectively, which is the highest ever ranking for either in the AGS Poll. Northern Arizona came all the way from out of the poll altogether to #20 after upsetting previous top 10 ranked Sacramento State – their first top appearance in the AGS Top 25 since the 2018 season.

Teams falling this week were headlined by aforementioned Idaho who dropped 7 spots to #10 after their loss to UC Davis. Sacramento State fell 8 spots to #18 due to their previously mentioned loss to NAU. Southern Illinois slipped 6 spots down to #21 after being blown out by South Dakota. Similarly, Illinois State fell 8 spots to #25 after a lopsided loss to NDSU. Wofford fell out of the top 25 after taking a loss to SOCON rival Mercer.

In terms of conference representation the Big Sky and MVFC led the way each placing 6 teams into the top 25. They were followed by the CAA with 5, and the SOCON and UAC with 3 teams each in the top 25. There were 7 conferences represented in this week’s top 25.
