As the 2023 season kicked off we saw 9 teams in the preseason AGS Top 25 take losses in week 1 but only 2 of those were against FCS opponents so things stayed fairly steady with a few notable exceptions. The top 5 was unchanged from the preseason poll with South Dakota State taking the top spot getting 47 of 49 first place votes. They were once again followed by North Dakota State, Montana State, Furman, and Holy Cross in that order to round out the top 5.
Teams climbing this week were led by UC Davis and Delaware who each moved up 4 spots to #12 and #18, respectively, after dominating week 1 road wins over Texas A&M-Commerce and Stony Brook. Southern Illinois got back into the top 25 moving up to #22 after beating Austin Peay in their opener. Youngstown State made their first appearance in the AGS Top 25 since 2019 coming in at #24.
As for teams dropping this week the most notable who stayed in the top 25 was Southeast Missouri State who fell 3 spots to #16 after getting trounced by FBS Kansas State. Richmond, after being stunned at home by Morgan State, fell out of the top 25 as did Chattanooga, who fell completely out of the poll, after dropping their season opener to North Alabama.
In terms of conference representation, the Big Sky and the MVFC led the way each placing 6 teams into the top 25. They were followed by the CAA with 5, the SOCON with 3, and the Southland with 2 teams in the top 25. 8 conferences were represented in this week’s top 25.
